Although we are now located in Virginia, Ecola Poodles was established in the 1970s in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Ecola is the name of an Oregon State Park that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. I hope someday to return to that area.
Our first poodles were Standards. We bred and showed many over the years, and they are still #1 in my heart. However, time has a way of limiting what we are able to do, and I found that, due to arthritis, I could no longer handle grooming these huge show coats. So, I had to give up showing Standard Poodles. I decided to get into Chinese Cresteds, a much smaller breed, with minimal grooming compared to a poodle. They are great little dogs, and we bred and showed them for about 10 years, but my love for Poodles was strong, so I decided to go to the smaller poodles. I attended a UKC show just to watch....and lo and behold, saw some parti colored standard poodles there and I was smitten. Knowing that I could not handle that size anymore, I decided to pursue toy or mini sized parti colored poodles. So we now have both solid and parti colored poodles.
Although Parti Colored Poodles are not allowed in the show ring in AKC, they ARE shown in Europe, soon to be allowed in Canada, and in the US, at UKC shows. All of our dogs have genetic health testing done before they are bred, and nothing is bred that does not have normal results.
I am striving to breed the Toy size Poodle, but we do get both Toy and "oversized" Toy puppies, especially with the parti colored ones. These oversized ones are sometimes referred to as "small miniatures." Most of our puppies grow up to be between 10" and 12" tall. For showing purposes, the Toys are to be 10" or under, and anything over that is shown as a Mini.
On the following pages you can see our Poodles, both past and present. I hope you enjoy looking.
